The Family

We teach that Scripture presents marriage as a sacred, covenantal union, created and ordained by God in the Garden of Eden, between one man and one woman, to endure until separated by death.  This sacred union of husband and wife is intended for the purposes of mutual companionship, the bearing and raising of children, and the health of society.  The marriage of one man and one woman functions as a picture of the union of Christ and His Church, and this is the pattern which marriage is to follow.  Although husband and wife (male and female) are equal in dignity and nature, the husband is to function as the head of his wife in loving, servant leadership as Christ is the head of the church.  The husband is to provide for, protect, and lead his family.  The wife is to submit herself to the servant leadership of her husband.  Divorce is a breach of the sacred covenant of marriage and is only permitted in Scripture under specific circumstances, such as adultery and abandonment.

Scripture presents children as God’s blessing to a husband and wife.  Hence children, from the moment of conception, are to be joyfully received.  Parents are called upon to nurture and lovingly discipline their children from and in a Biblical worldview with the desire to see them become disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Children, for their part, are to honor and obey their parents in the Lord (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:15-25; 3:1-20; Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Joshua 24:15; Psalm 51:5; 78:1-8; 127; 128; 139:13-16; Malachi 2:14-16; Matthew 19:3-9; Mark 10:6-12- Romans 1:18-32; I Corinthians 7:1-16; Ephesians 5:21-33; 6:1-4; Colossians 3:18-21; I Timothy 5:8, 14; II Timothy 1:3-5; Hebrews 13:4; I Peter 3:1-7).
